Choosing a Domain Name and Building Your Brand Online in Rwanda

Why your domain name matters
Your domain is the first thing people see and type. It affects credibility, memorability, and even SEO. A good domain is an asset; a bad one is a constant headwind.
Choosing a domain name
- Keep it short: 2–3 words maximum. Under 15 characters is ideal.
- Make it memorable: Easy to spell, easy to say out loud. If you have to spell it for someone, it's too complicated.
- Avoid hyphens and numbers: They're confusing when spoken and look spammy.
- Include a keyword (optional): "kigaliplumber.rw" is descriptive but limiting. "plumbfix.rw" is brandable and flexible.
- Think long-term: Don't name yourself after a single product or location if you plan to expand.
- Check social media availability: Try to get the same handle on Instagram, Twitter/X, and Facebook.
.rw vs .com vs others
- .rw: Signals you're Rwandan. Good for local businesses. Available through RICTA-accredited registrars. Costs RWF 10 k–25 k/year.
- .com: Universal, trusted, expected. If available, grab it. Costs $10–15/year.
- .co.rw: Good alternative if .rw is taken. Popular for Rwandan companies.
- .store, .shop, .tech: New TLDs that describe what you do. Good for e-commerce or tech businesses.
- Our recommendation: Get the .rw for local trust and the .com for international reach. Redirect one to the other.
Registering your domain
- Check availability at ricta.rw (.rw) or namecheap.com / cloudflare.com (.com).
- Register immediately — good domains go fast. Don't wait.
- Enable auto-renew and keep payment details current. Losing your domain is devastating.
- Add domain privacy (WHOIS protection) — it hides your personal info from public lookups. Some registrars include it free.
- Set up DNS — point the domain to your hosting provider. Your host will give you nameservers to enter.
Building a consistent brand
- Logo: Hire a designer (RWF 50 k–200 k) or use Canva/Hatchful for a starter logo. Keep it simple and scalable — it needs to work on a favicon and a billboard.
- Colors: Pick 2–3 brand colors. Use them consistently on your site, social media, and printed materials.
- Typography: Choose 1–2 fonts. Google Fonts are free and web-optimized.
- Voice: Define your brand's tone — professional, friendly, witty, authoritative? Apply it everywhere.
- Email: Use you@yourdomain.rw, not gmail.com. It's more professional and reinforces your brand.
Protecting your brand online
- Register your brand name on major social platforms even if you don't use them yet.
- Set up Google Alerts for your brand name to monitor mentions.
- Consider trademark registration with RDB if your brand has significant value.
- Monitor for copycat domains (e.g. someone registering yourbrand-store.com).
Your domain and brand are long-term assets. Invest time upfront to choose well, and protect them as your business grows.
